Thai Airways is assessing the expansion into India’s Tier II cities with the guidance of a new Airbus A321neo aircraft in 2026, Chief Executive Commercial Chattasinga said.
The move comes amid growing travel between countries and is part of Thai Airways’ plan to develop Bangkok as a regional hub for aviation.
“India is a very important market for Thai Airways. In winter, we fly to eight major cities and Bodh Gaya,” he said.
Currently, Thai Airways operates more than 75 flights per week to India (one way). Delhi is its biggest destination, with around three flights daily, with data from aerial analysis being the Cirium show. One day, Thai Airways operates four flights between Bangkok and Delhi.
Chatassega said that India’s middle-sized cities are still unexplored and that airlines are assessing the possibilities. Thai Airways will begin picking up Airbus A321neo aircraft later this year, allowing more routes to be released to India starting next year.
Over 2 million Indian tourists visited Thailand in 20024, surpassing pre-pandemic records in 2019 with 1.9 million visitors. India is the third largest source market for Thailand tourism, after China and Malaysia.
While Indian airlines primarily serve as point points between India and Thailand, Thai Airways’ Bangkok hub serves as a transport hub for Indians traveling to Australia, Bali (Indonesia) and other destinations. Thai Airways plans to launch services in New Zealand next year.
Last year, India and Thailand revised their air services agreements that allow airlines from both countries to increase frequency. Flights between India and Thailand are increasing by Air India, Indigo and Thai Lion Air, increasing flights by 20% per year.
Chatasingha said that more capabilities are needed as simple visa standards encourage more travel between the two countries.
“South markets like Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai are promising and require more capabilities,” he said.
Thai Airways also aims to strengthen partnerships with other carriers. The airline has a code-sharing agreement with Air India, and the topic is being discussed, Chatassessinga said.
Last week, Thai Airways signed a joint business agreement with Turkish Airlines. This gives both airlines the opportunity to strengthen their route networks and offer more travel options to their customers.
