Tata Power Renewable Energy (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, on Wednesday announced the completion of the 126 megawatt (MW) Omkareshwar floating solar project, one of the largest floating solar power installations in India. A trial run was announced.
The engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth Rs 596 million was awarded by NHDC, the company said.
The Omkareshwar floating solar power project in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district provides sustainable power to the Madhya Pradesh State Power Transmission Company Limited (MPPTCL).
Located between the Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar hydropower stations, the project overcame complex environmental and logistical challenges such as fluctuating water levels, strong winds, and limited access to the site, with just 26 It was successfully completed within a month.
The project will feature 213,460 bifacial glass-to-glass modules, generating 204,580 MWh of energy per year and offsetting 173,893 tons of CO₂ emissions per year.
To ensure stability and operational efficiency, the installation incorporates state-of-the-art engineering solutions including a robust mooring system, wave breakers, ballast anchors and adaptive cableways.
Additionally, it will feature the world’s largest inverter floating platform covering a water area of 260 hectares, setting a new global benchmark for floating solar power technology. Beyond carbon reduction, the project will save an estimated 32.5 million cubic meters of water per year by minimizing evaporation in the reservoir.
Deepesh Nanda, CEO and Managing Director of TPREL, said: “This project will explore how renewable resources can be leveraged to drive significant carbon reductions while optimizing the use of valuable land and water resources. “It’s a powerful example of what can be done.”
Rajeev Jain, Managing Director, NHPC, said: “By partnering with TPREL on this project, we have demonstrated that floating solar power technology can provide clean energy while protecting critical water resources. We are excited about the potential this project offers for future renewable energy development in India.”
The Omkareshwar floating solar power project is a blueprint for future installations around the world and will set an international standard for floating solar power technology. This shows how technological innovation can overcome environmental obstacles and have a lasting impact on India’s journey towards renewable energy leadership.
This achievement brings TPREL’s total renewable energy capacity to 10.9 gigawatts (GW), with 5.6 GW of projects in various stages of implementation. Its operational capacity reaches 5.3GW, including 4.3GW of solar power projects and 1GW of wind energy projects.
