Former Cardiff and Leeds defender Sol Bamba has died, aged 39.
Bamba was employed by Turkish club Adanaspor, who announced the news late on Saturday night.
“After feeling unwell before yesterday’s match against Manisa Football Club, technical director Suleimane Bamba was taken to Manisa Celal Bayar University Hospital where he unfortunately lost his life. Our condolences go to his family and the community,” the club statement read.
Bamba was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma while at Cardiff in 2021 but was declared cancer-free after undergoing chemotherapy and has since returned to play for the Bluebirds and Middlesbrough.
He also played for clubs such as Leicester, Hibernian and Dunfermline, and made 46 international appearances for Ivory Coast.
“Everyone at LUFC is saddened to learn of the passing of former LUFC captain Sol Bamba,” Leeds said in a statement published on X.
“Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and friends at this tragic time. Rest in peace Sol. You will forever be in our hearts.”
Middlesbrough posted: “We are devastated to hear that Sol Bamba has passed away, aged 39. Our deepest condolences go to Sol’s family and friends at this time. Rest in peace Sol.”
