The NFL New Year begins today, and the Pittsburgh Steelers still don’t have the answers yet as to who the 2025 start quarterback will be. The team appears to be waiting for a decision from Aaron Rodgers before moving forward, but potential decisions from the Steelers, New York’s Geants and Minnesota Bikis may not come anytime soon. Good morning football, Peter Schrager said that Sources he spoke to by the Giants and Steelers I don’t know about the potential timelines that Rodgers will decide on.
“Rogers, we know we’re going somewhere, and it might not be just a week. It can take two, three, four weeks. If you think you know the answer to what Aaron Rogers timetable is, you know more than the Steelers or the Giants,” Schlager said. “I spoke to sources on both sides, so everyone got that shrugged emoji. We’re waiting, we’re giving him his space and letting him decide.”
The question for the Steelers, and the teams involved in fact, is long enough that they can afford to wait. For the Giants, things are a little easier as they have the third overall pick in the draft. They can take a quarterback with that pick or package it and move to number one to win Cam Ward, the draft consensus top quarterback. The Steelers, selected at No. 21, don’t have the luxury of being able to pass the quarterback needs up to the draft.
Russell Wilson is currently a fallback option for both the Steelers and Giants, so there is no reduction in the number of starters available either. If Aaron Rodgers had been dragged over weeks of negotiations and decisions, the Steelers could see a scenario that would set back and return to Wilson rather than putting himself empty-handed by waiting too long.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport also said in Good Morning Football that today’s decision could come, so it seems like it could actually happen anytime. However, the more the Steelers have to wait for a decision, the less likely it is that Rogers will eventually come to Pittsburgh and wear black and gold.
