Reds RHP Nick Martinez Loses No-hit Bid To Pinch Hitter In the 9th Inning

2 Min Read

Cincinnati Red right-hander Nick Martinez had no hitters throughout eight innings of Friday night’s match against the San Diego Padres, but lost it at the ninth bottom. After walking through Trenton Brooks to open the frame, pinch hitter Elias Diaz doubled from the center field fence, finishing Martinez’s no-hit bid.

Following Diaz’s hit, Martinez was released from the Taylor Rodgers match. Martinez, 34, walked two steps and attacked more than six times in eight innings of one hit baseball. He threw a pitch of 112.

Martinez’s pitch was 102 last season high. He has not yet pitched a perfect game in the major leagues.

Spencer Steer of Cincinnati was his first three homers in his career.

Martinez’s final two appearances were relieved, where he pitched three total shutout innings.

San Diego hasn’t been hit 11 times in franchise history. The last no-hitter thrown against the Padres came on August 14, 2001 when Diamondbacks left-handed Tyler Gilbert held a hitless in his first MLB start.

Martinez was close to a 3-0 victory over Wade Miley from Cleveland on May 7, 2021, having scored the 18th no-hit by a Reds pitcher.

Three hitters have been thrown at the Great American Ballpark since opening in 2003 by Reds right-handed Homer Bailey in 2013, Cubs’ Jake Arietta in 2016 and Giants’ Blakesnell.
