The main theory behind why Aaron Rodgers hasn’t signed the Pittsburgh Steelers yet is because he still has the hopes of the Minnesota Vikings taking him all in the 2025 season. A few weeks ago, it was reported that they were planning to move forward with QB JJ McCarthy in the first round of 2024, but the doors were never completely closed.
If McCarthy is struggling, there seems to be still a remote possibility that the Vikings will change their minds. According to Ian Rapoport, it doesn’t happen for quite some time.
“I had to think about what had to happen so they would say, ‘Well, we’re going to try and sign Aaron Rodgers, not now.’ Let’s say Rogers is waiting, but he doesn’t think he’ll do that, but let’s say through training camp, “Now, JJ needs veterans, not what we thought.” Via Pat McAfee Show. “He’s not going to wait that long.”
The Steelers don’t sound willing to wait that long. Mike Tomlin was pretty relaxed about the deadline, but he was just saying that training camp was a rough line in the sand. Team president Art Rooney II took a slightly more rigorous stance and said that they were willing to wait a little longer, but not forever. Waiting until training camp begins can be eternal in the organization’s eyes.
The Steelers are constantly talking about how important the team building process is in training camp, so I think they’re willing to wait anywhere for that long.
If Rogers had to wait until July without assurance that he would receive a call from the Vikings, the Steelers would have already moved by then. It’s Rodgers has no choice, so if he’s dead by playing in 2025, it’s going to be pretty gambling. For these reasons, it seems inevitable that four NFL MVP signatures with the Steelers will happen in a relatively short order.
Will it happen next week at McAfee’s Big Night AHT? I don’t think it’s probably the case. But will that happen before the draft? I’m pretty positive when it comes to that.
