Former Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders has joined the coaching staff at Manchester City and has become Pep Guardiola’s new assistant.
City has simultaneously announced the appointment of James French. James French also worked as a set piece coach at Liverpool.
The pair will replace Guardiola’s former assistants, Junma Lilo, Inigo Dominguez and Carlos Visenz, who left the club at the end of last season.
The Ljinders joined Guardiola’s coaching staff and were part of the backroom team of Anfield’s Jurgen Klopp and Brendan Rodgers in two separate spells.
The 42-year-old first joined Liverpool under Rogers in 2014 before becoming a nine-year transformational assistant in 2015 with the Germans taking on the current Premier League champions.
The Dutch coach then briefly left Anfield in 2018 to acquire a stint as the NEC head coach at Eredivisy. However, after being fired by the NEC at the end of the 2017/18 season, the Ljinders returned to Liverpool.
The Ljinders left Reds with Klopp at the end of the 2023/24 season, most recently in charge of Red Bull Salzburg. Owned by Red Bull GmbH.
After joining the company in 2012, the Frenchman spent more than a decade as an opposition analyst in Liverpool, spent his experience in Welsh FA and time in Swansea.
