San Diego Padres’ Manny Machado won his 2,000th career with the Arizona Diamondbacks with a sharp single from the diving shortstop Geraldo Perdomo gloves.
The milestone hit led four innings from Arizona’s Starterzak Gallen. Since joining the Padres as a free agent in 2019, Machado has received a standing ovation from the crowds at Petco Park, where he is a fan favorite.
The All-Star slugger singled to the left field on the first field for his 1,999th hit.
Machado is now 297th with the fifth active player to reach the milestone. He is the 12th player under the age of 32 to score 350 home runs and 2,000 hits.
Machado made his Baltimore debut in 2012 and had 977 hits with the Orioles before being traded for the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 18, 2018.
He has 950 hits in the Padres and is ranked fifth on the franchise list. Hall of Fame Tony Gwyn was 3,141 in his 20-season career.
Machado was selected as the first third baseman of the National League All-Star team this year.
