Amazon has announced Alexa+ powered by Gen AI, an improved version of its popular virtual assistant that leverages the power of generative artificial intelligence to improve the user experience. Alexa+ may have imagined exactly when you first heard voice assistants like Alexa, Siri, and Google, but their shortcomings don’t have the disappointments that come with it.
The improved voice assistant can generate responses instead of repeating what was programmed. With Generated AI, Alexa+ also has a natural conversation with the user, rather than listening to prompts and responding with actions. I remember asking at the start of the chat, as it supports memory, reminds me of preferences and conversations, and maintains context throughout the conversation.

However, ALEXA+ is not available on all echo devices, but at least initially is not available. Here is a list of Echo devices that Alexa+ will support when it starts rolling out next month.

Amazon has a large lineup of smart speakers that do not support Alexa+’s generation AI capabilities first, but that doesn’t mean they won’t get compatibility later.
Amazon’s Alexa+ plans could be heavily linked to the display factor, so Echo speakers can be removed from the new generation AI assistant. Smart Display gives you a visual glimpse into conversations with Alexa+, including integration with apps that users need to see what their virtual assistant has come up with. After all, ordering an Uber without looking at the screen can be confusing.

But Alexa+ can do more for users without relying on display, answering questions, creating stories, and more. I think Amazon will eventually release Alexa+ for its smart speakers, especially since there are many Alexa households that don’t have an echo show. Zdnet contacted Amazon to comment on this but has not yet responded.
