NorsePower, a provider of wind propulsion systems, has signed a contract to equip six NewBuild tankers from the GEFO Shipping Group with NorsePower Rotor Sails.
This order includes four 3,850dwt chemical tankers each equipped with a 20mx4m rotor sail and two 7,900dWT chemical tankers each equipped with a 28mx4m rotor sail.
Designed by German SDC Ship Design & Consult, the vessel integrates wind thrust from the early design stage to maximize performance and efficiency.
The vessels built by Nantong Xianyu shipbuilding will be delivered between 2026 and 2028.
The vessel is supported by the German government’s Nachhaltige Modernisierung von Küstenschiffen.
The deal, according to Norsepower, marks the first collaboration between Norsepower, Gefo and Nantong Xianyu shipbuilders, showing the move towards adopting wind propulsion in European-owned fleets.
GEFO Technical Director. Henning Brauer said: “At GEFO, we are committed to building a future-ready fleet that meets the highest standards of environmental performance and operational efficiency.
“In partnership with NorsePower, we will be able to integrate proven wind propulsion technology into new builds from day one, supporting both sustainability goals and long-term competitiveness.”
The rotor sale includes NorsePower’s Ex Compliance Design. It is certified for use on vessels carrying flammable cargo and complies with all classifications and safety standards.
Manufactured in Dedicated factory of NorsePower in Chinarotor sale will be delivered to a fully assembled and tested shipyard and ready for installation.
Additionally, GEFO benefits from the AI-driven NorsePower Control Control System and NorsePower Digital Dimension, which provides access to the secure, cloud-based data infrastructure of the NorsePower cloud.
This integration facilitates accurate real-time performance optimization, predictive maintenance and complete transparency regarding client emission savings.
Heikki Pöntynen, CEO of Norsepower, said: “This is NorsePower’s groundbreaking agreement not only includes two new customers and six vessels, but also shows the fundamental changes in how Wind Promote is perceived in commercial transport.
“We’re no longer talking about one-off pilot installations. We’re now ensuring our full fleet commitment. This is a clear indication that we’re not only opening up the market, but now leading it in terms of both our proven delivery capabilities and customer trust.”
