Time is almost here. It’s time to pre-order the Nintendo Switch 2.
With most US retailers set up to eventually push pre-orders on Midnight ET on April 24th, most Switch enthusiasts’ priorities will certainly grab one during this first wave. However, let’s resign in a very realistic possibility that Switch 2 will sell out.
Today, Nintendo announced an apology when they were interested in pre-ordering in Japan far Available supply exceeded. In Japan alone, Nintendo said 2.2 million people applied to pre-order Switch 2 from the My Nintendo Store lottery. Unfortunately, that is not a foreshadowing for American gamers.

Why do Switch 2 pre-orders sell out?
If you don’t remember, when the last time there was a big console launch on the PlayStation 5, the global shortage made it incredibly fortunate and nearly impossible to get it for a very long time. To be fair, Covid-19 played a major role in it, but thanks to President Donald Trump’s tariffs and the escalating trade war with China, it’s not like the Nintendo Switch 2 is on sale in ideal conditions. We asked the major retailers (Walmart, Best Buy, Target) how they would deal with potentially priced Gougers who are eager to snap their Switch 2 supply, but have not yet received a reply.
So, if the retailer you choose doesn’t work (and will not pan out any direct options either), There’s no need to panic. Inevitably, there is a greater chance that you will either pre-order the Switch 2 or buy it after it is started.
We don’t know what the Switch 2 purchase ecosystem will look like in the coming weeks. It may be difficult to get it. However, if you follow these proven steps to track inventory online, you can put yourself in a better position than the Switch 2 if you sell out.

How to track Switch 2 refills online
Be careful: this is more of an art than a science. However, using these tactics will help you know at least when the Switch 2 console is available.
Switch between two refills from the retailer itself
The very quick and simple thing you can do is go to the store page for the retailer Walmart and GameStop Now, sign up for stock alerts directly from the source before starting your pre-order. These two retailers in particular will be prompted on the right side of the store page to let you know when stock is available if you provide an email address.
I need to note that I have had uneven luck with this feature in the past. Perhaps it’s not the most reliable way to track refills, but it’s one of the many options you have in your back pocket.
From the inventory tracking website
There are a variety of websites that track retail inventory easily and out of hand. Speaking of social media, I’ve found this to be (probably sadly) the easiest way to maintain the available consoles where. I know, I know – we all want to stop ruin through our feed. But for Nintendo Switch Gamers, there’s a bit more to do.
Thankfully, there’s the entire cottage industry out there with great care and tracing console sales and deals and posting them to X and Bluesky. Especially for the purpose of Switch 2 Jake Randall and Matt Swider X should meet your needs, and both have hundreds of thousands of followers.
My favorite social media account for this kind of thing is wario64. x and Blue skiing. The mysterious operator of this account tracks all sorts of stock alerts and transactions, primarily in the gaming world, but he also dabbles in technology and other pop culture. Wario64’s reach can definitely be a bit wider if you turn on your account’s postalt and find a Switch 2 refill, but if these two consoles are hard to reach in 2020, this account is how you won both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X.
And if everything else fails, you can try to destroy the go-to retailer update button when the pre-order goes live in the middle of the night tonight. Good luck.
