Pop culture fans of all ages flock to New York Comic Con, which opens Thursday at the Javits Center. A fresh lineup of guest speakers, merchandise, and surprise drops await attendees and cosplayers who want to take photos with celebrities and immerse themselves in their favorite manga, TV shows, anime, and movies.
Brien McDonald, vice president of content at event organizer ReedPop, recently gave CNET a preview of what’s to come and some of the most exciting announcements. As someone closely involved in (and a fan of) New York City’s TV and film scene, MacDonald points out that studios like Netflix and Paramount have big plans.
McDonald is personally excited that The Simpsons and Apple TV Plus will be appearing at the event for the first time. “Apple TV has really secured a great spot in the streaming space, where they offer high-quality TV series with prestige, and it’s not just a genre. I think something like Ghost is cool. The reason studios and producers are bringing this to New York Comic Con is because it shows that this event is now deeply ingrained in pop culture. ” He also acknowledged that panels on genre shows like “Dune: Prophecy” and “The Penguin” are “going to blow people away.”

Anime at New York Comic Con
McDonald’s said there will be a “big anime kickoff on Thursday.” On that day, a panel for the new Dragon Ball series “Dragon Ball Daima” will be held on the Imperial Stage. The presentation will coincide with the series’ 40th anniversary in November. On Friday, Fairy Tail creator Hiro Mashima will appear on the main stage to talk about his series, and on Saturday, fans will be able to watch an exclusive preview of Overlord: Sacred Kingdom.
One Piece fans should check out Friday’s panel at Empire Stage. There will be a “big presentation” there, according to McDonald’s. Viz Media, Crunchyroll, and Toei Animation are also hosting various presentations to share what’s happening with their latest projects.
And as Bleach celebrates its 20th anniversary, anime geeks will want to tune in to the Bleach: Millennium Blood War panel on Saturday at 12:45pm ET. Fans will get a glimpse of upcoming episodes and hear from voice actors Seiichi Morita and Noriaki Sugiyama.

Did you hear that SpongeBob SquarePants hit a milestone this year? To mark the show’s 25th anniversary, Nickelodeon is celebrating with a dedicated booth at NYCC. “If you’re a fan and you’ve grown up with this series and want to take a walk down memory lane to see what’s down the road, check it out,” McDonald said. The setup includes AR, 3D animation, and large models of Bikini Bottom’s Krusty Cub and SpongeBob’s famous Pineapple House. Friday at 11 a.m., Empire Stage will also feature panels from the show featuring voice actors Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Roger Bumpass, Mr. Lawrence, Clancy Brown and Carolyn Lawrence.

“We’re going to see a lot of new trailers,” McDonald said. Max has a screening of DC’s Creature Commandos and other surprises in store for releases like Dune: Prophecy.
McDonald also hinted that Netflix plans to release a trailer for the new film The Electric State, starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. Both actors are scheduled to appear on a panel discussion about the film with the Russo brothers on Friday. “There’s going to be a lot of excitement about what they’re going to do on that panel. It’s going to be an exciting panel,” he shared.
