It’s less common for players to complain about the ratings of their peers, but that’s what happened earlier this week. It came as a surprise to us to see Jokic’s rating drop by one point after his MVP season, so we decided to investigate whether there was a pattern of NBA 2K underrating the Serbian superstar.
After all, one could argue that it is.
We compared players’ league rankings according to NBA 2K Ratings with their rankings according to HoopsHype’s Global Ratings metric for the past 15 seasons to identify the biggest discrepancies.
Among players who’ve played in the league for at least five years, Nikola Jokic had the widest gap between his preseason NBA 2K ratings and his actual global ratings for the year. Even more notable, he was underrated relative to his global ratings for eight consecutive seasons.
