Irish amateur darts player Michael Flynn made the headline this week after a shocking victory over Michael Van Gerwen – and it turns out he was inspired by a text message from his wife I’ve done it.
Playing on the PDC Challenge Tour, Flynn was the native Netherlands of three-time world champion Vangerwen, a late call to the third-player championship event of the season.
He only learned he would play on a Sunday morning, knocking out the world at Ross Maren the following day after making a crazy dash from his home west of Ireland.
“When I saw him play Van Gerwen, I laughed,” Flynn said his work that day was working in social care in Limerick County. Sky Sports News.
“I texted my wife and she said, “Good, if you’re planning on becoming an expert, you just need to compete with these blowjobs, so just go outside. beat him” – and I did.
“I showed that amateurs can mix it with big boys.”
“It was a big moment, a bit of a shock. I think it was a shock to most people. I was shocked to him.
“Beating him in his backyard was a particularly great achievement. I was happy with it and it worked for me.
“It’s probably a good moment for darts where people who are amateurs can see that we can mix it with the big boys and beat them anytime.”
Flynn says he was brought back to reality after his prominent victory by a friend who reminded him that it was his turn to sort out Lotto’s syndicate.
The 32-year-old hastily explained how much he can practice around his job – and build a house.
“Pull your bags and hit the road as quickly as possible.”
Flynn said:
“It was my manager and he said, ‘What is the chance of you getting over the Netherlands?”
“We talked for 20 minutes, looked for a flight to see if that was possible. We received a late flight from Dublin, so we ‘packed our bags and hit the road as quickly as possible.’
“I was getting ready to work on a Monday morning. That night I thought I was going to pack lunch and the next moment I want to go to bed as soon as possible. ”
Flynn added:
“I’m currently trying to build a house, so I have a makeshift board in the utility room of my parents’ house. It’s not an ideal setup, but it’s working well for me.”
