Menendez Brothers Speak Out in New Netflix Doc After Monsters Release

The first trial began in 1993, with the brothers tried separately. The case eventually ended in a mistrial when the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. A retrial began in 1995, but the prosecution successfully challenged most of the evidence regarding the abuse. Eric and Lyle, who were tried together this time, were eventually found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison in 1996. They continue to appeal their sentences, but have been unsuccessful.

“I believed I had created a caricature of Lyle that was rooted in the horrible and blatant likes that permeated the show, and had moved on from Lyle’s lies and destructive characterization,” Eric’s statement, which was shared on Lyle’s Facebook page on Friday, September 20, read. “I can only assume this was done on purpose. While I am heartbroken, I do not believe Ryan Murphy would be so ignorant and inaccurate about the facts of our lives without malicious intent.”

He continued, “I am saddened to learn that Netflix’s disingenuous portrayal of the tragedy surrounding our crimes has taken the painful truth several steps back — returning us to a time when prosecutors built their stories on the belief system that men don’t get sexually abused and that men experience the trauma of rape differently than women. This terrible lie has been debunked and exposed over the past two decades by countless brave victims who have overcome personal shame and courageously spoken out.”
