Kansas coach Bill Self rips big man Hunter Dickinson for ‘bonehead play’ vs. TCU

3 Min Read

Kansas big man Hunter Dickinson grabbed the offensive rebound and cradled the ball to his body with both arms, not intending to let TCU lose the ball.

Coach Bill Self wasn’t happy with the way the AP All-America center’s preseason play ended. Even after officials blew the whistle in the second half for the 12th-ranked Jayhawks, Trazarian White never gave in to attempts to get the ball back. They won 74-61 at TCU on Wednesday night.

“I thought it was stupid for our players to hang on to the ball like that,” Self said.

The 7-foot-2 Dickinson and the 6-6 White remained tangled, stumbling out of bounds as the final whistle blew. TCU guard Vasean Aret and freshman Malik Diallo also reached for the ball. When Dickinson finally gave up the ball, officials reviewed the play and issued technical fouls to both Dickinson and White.

“That was a dumb play. But what made it a dumb play more than anything…stop when the whistle goes, and I’m sure they blew it a few times,” Self said. spoke. “It cost us possession, so yeah, I wasn’t happy to see that at all.”

After the tie, the Horned Frogs had possession and White responded to a pass from Noah Reynolds with an alley-oop dunk to take a 48-47 lead with 12:44 remaining. It was the last time they led the match.

Dickinson, who had a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds, was not one of the players Kansas brought in for postgame interviews.

TCU coach Jamie Dixon, who was on the other side of the court where the players were tangled, had a much different reaction to the play than Self.

“I don’t think it was important,” said Dixon, who thought there was nothing dirty or nefarious about the play.

“I don’t even know what the T was for, but maybe the authorities told them to stop,” he said. “They didn’t do what the officials told them to do.”
