Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been officially appointed as the next Chief Justice of India and will assume office from November 11th. The appointment has received President Drupadi Murmu’s consent, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said on Thursday.
“In the exercise of the powers vested in the Constitution of India, the President, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, with effect from November 11, 2024.” Meghwal posted on X.
Justice Khanna, currently the second most senior judge in the Supreme Court, will become the 51st Chief Justice of India. His term of office will be approximately seven months until his retirement on May 13, 2025.
Justice Khanna was recommended for the top constitutional post by outgoing CJI DY Chandrachud. The move follows the practice of outgoing chief justices appointing the second-most senior judge to replace them.
CJI Chandrachud, who took charge on November 9, 2022, is scheduled to retire on November 10, 2024, as Supreme Court judges retire at the age of 65.
