New York State Senator Zoran Mamdani has pulled out an astounding upset this week. In the Democratic mayoral primary in New York City, he defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo, a longtime winner who recognized the race hours after the polls were shut down. The two candidates were the same parties, but held very different positions among them. Cuomo is old and spent more than a decade as governor, establishing himself as a centralist in law and order. Mamdani is young, new to politics, and completely progressive. This is the main race in just one city, but it has produced national news and could shake up the Democratic strategy after reelection after Trump.
