INDIANAPOLIS – Colorado CB/WR Travis Hunter could be the first player to be selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, and has good shots at least taken in the first non-quarter. He is an elite athlete who plays both ways, but many feel that his best fit is at cornerback. But looking back at his performance as a defensive back, no one has exposed him more than Stanford Wal Eric Ayomer.
Rewind in 2023, Stanford disrupt Colorado (46-43) with double overtime after chasing 29-0 at halftime. Ayomanor was the only biggest catalyst in that rally, with 13 receptions for 294 yards and three touchdowns in that game. He played against Hunter throughout most of the second half. We asked Ayomanor about this performance. While most receivers prefer to be in their own glory, Ayomanor quickly deflected everything to his teammates and quickly eliminated how they helped him make it a success.
“To be honest, it has to be the whole team,” Ayomanor told me at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. “In the second half, the line really brings out its own and obviously Ashton. [Daniels] I was delivering the ball accurately and on time, and that’s all I could ask for as a receiver. There will never be a personal effort there. ”
It’s an impressive answer, and a breath of fresh air when it comes to wide receiver positioning. Ayomanor played 24 games in two seasons, with 125 receptions for 1,844 yards and 12 TDs.
He is listed at 6-2, 209 pounds (combining measurements that have not yet been measured), and he takes pride in shocking attacks at every stage.
“I’m not afraid to get dirty,” he said. “I love blocking. That’s something I’m proud of. If you get to the finish line, I’m not going to ask you to throw a fade. If you want me to get off firmly and lock it from the edge, I’m going to do it. You’re going to get someone who’s not afraid to do dirty work.”
Looking back towards the attacks that are running and the more physical style of playstyle the NFL, the larger receivers that are willing to block are more valuable, and Ayomanor fits the description.
He comes from Alberta, Canada, so perhaps some of his tough mentality comes from his background in hockey, Canada’s favorite entertainment.
“I started playing hockey when I was younger,” Ayomer said. “At some point in middle school, I really started falling in love with soccer. That’s when I decided to stop playing hockey and pursue football full-time. And honestly, I was really lucky to meet this guy named Justin Dillon in Toronto. I’m really lucky, and as soon as he gave me the opportunity, I dumped hockey because I wanted to play at the highest level.”
But he is far from all bravery. Ayomanor also has a brain.
Stanford has a high standard for athletes, and he described it as a sacrifice that needs to be made to secure a path to that program. Some athletes choose basic majors with less academic rigor, while Ayomanor majored in computer science.
The Pittsburgh Steelers can use another large athletic receiver and also use a person who is the multiplier of the power in that room with his leadership. Ayomanor absolutely has all the qualities that make him attractive to a team like Pittsburgh.
He confirmed he had a formal meeting with the Steelers at the Combine and said it was great.
“He’s a great coach and a great guy,” Ayomer said of Mike Tomlin. “I really enjoyed the interview.”
