The New York Giants continued their deficit on Sunday with a 14-11 loss to the lowly New Orleans Saints at MetLife Stadium.
The Giants had a chance to send the game into overtime, but Graham Gano’s tying field goal attempt was blocked with seconds left. It was a fitting end to an ugly match, and a reminder that Brian Daboll’s group finds new, interesting and embarrassing ways to lose every week.
The Giants enter Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, a game they opened at home as a 14.5-point underdog. I agree.
Let’s take a look at where the Giants sit in various power rankings as we enter Week 15.
ICYMI, they’ve been around for exactly 100 seasons. Also, they are just two losses away from losing 10 consecutive games for the first time in team history.
The Giants found another way to lose this year, as a Saints lineman jumped the line and blocked a field goal attempt that would have tied the game. The team is terrible.
There’s no reason to be too flashy. Sure, the Giants are averaging an embarrassing 5.2 yards per pass play and rank last with eight touchdown passes in 13 games, but that all has to do with their inability to score. The Giants are averaging 14.9 points per game, which is more than two points worse than any other team. When asked Sunday why the passing game struggled so much against the Saints, coach Brian Daboll said, “It’s a collective thing, so blame me.” That makes sense since he took over the play calling this season.
The Giants showed some resiliency on defense, but lacked what was needed on the offensive line and special teams. Brian Daboll’s fortunes are still not looking good.
The Giants played badly, but still attempted a 35-yard FG to send the game into overtime. And then I got blocked. This season can’t end early for them.
Sunday began with a plane flying over MetLife Stadium with a message imploring John Mara to fix the team. Against the Saints, Graham Gano attempted a tying 35-yard field goal, but it was blocked in the final seconds. The Giants’ defense played gamely despite battling injuries, with Drew Lock overcoming a brutal first half and giving New York a chance late. Still, nothing good came of this game, as the Giants fell to 0-7 against MetLife this season, leaving two playoff-bound teams (Baltimore and Indianapolis) on their home schedule. In fact, the remaining four games (including road games against Atlanta and Philadelphia) are all against postseason-hungry opponents. Brian Daboll has a month left to salvage something from this lost season, but things are looking pretty bleak right now.
Alex Kennedy, Pro Football Network:
This year has been an unforgettable season for New York. The Giants snapped an eight-game losing streak Sunday, dropping their Week 14 matchup to the Saints 14-11.
Daniel Jones was benched but then released after 10 games, and the team has since played with Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito. Regardless of who is under center, this offense has struggled mightily.
It will be interesting to see if the Giants part ways with head coach Brian Daboll. He had some tough battles, but if New York State releases him, many franchises will want to hire him.
