Let’s take a closer look at the following questions and predictions:
1. Who is the quarterback with the most passing touchdowns?
Garrett Nussmeyer, Carson Beck, Noah Fifita, Jalen Milroe
All four of these quarterbacks are capable through the air, but I expect Beck to continue his strong form. He has thrown seven touchdown passes in two games, including five (a school record) last week against Tennessee Tech. He has yet to throw an interception, and he’ll be playing against a Kentucky team that gave up 31 points to a mediocre South Carolina team. Milroe is also a sneaky good pick here, as Wisconsin has narrow wins over weak opponents in Western Michigan and South Dakota. Fifita is a prolific passer, but he’ll be playing against a tough Kansas State defense in what should be a great game.
prediction: Carson Beck
2. Rank the teams that earn the most points (highest to lowest).
Oregon, Oregon, Notre Dame, Purdue
Oregon is another team that hasn’t performed as well as people expected, but they have arguably the best offense in this group. They’re averaging 30.5 points per game. I expect preseason Heisman Trophy candidate Dillon Gabriel to make an early impact in this rivalry. It’s not that he’s played poorly, his 311.5 passing yards per game ranks 11th among Power 4 quarterbacks. Notre Dame’s offense looked stagnant last week against Northern Illinois, and with Ryan Walters’ brilliant scheme, I think Purdue’s defense will make for a low-scoring game. I expect the Ducks to win.
prediction: Oregon, Oregon State University, University of Notre Dame, Purdue University
3. Who will have the most rushing yards?
Caleb Johnson, RJ Harvey, Dylan Sampson, Jam Griffin
This might be my favorite pick because Caleb Johnson is one of the most exciting players in college football. The Iowa running back has been red hot this year, ranking fourth in the country in rushing yards (306) and tied for fifth in rushing touchdowns (4). Troy is 0-2 this season, allowing over 200 yards rushing in both losses. Dylan Sampson could also play here against 0-2 Kent State, but from what we’ve seen in the past two weeks, it’s hard not to bet on Johnson.
prediction: Caleb Johnson
4. Which team do you think will win their away game this week?
University of California, San Francisco, Boston College, IndianaNone (UCF, Boston College, and Indiana all lost away)
Everyone likes Boston College because they opened the season with a win over then-#10 ranked Florida State, but I think that says more about the Seminoles than it does the Eagles. Missouri is a legitimate playoff contender with the best receiver in the country in Luther Burden III, so I don’t think they’ll go into Columbia and win a tough game. I expect the Hoosiers to go to the Rose Bowl and beat the Bruins, who looked very underdogs in their opener against Hawaii. Indiana is in its first year under coach Curt Cignetti, who has been the driving force behind James Madison’s noise for the past few years. They scored 77 points against Western Illinois last week and then beat Florida International, 31-7, handily. UCLA beat Hawaii by three points, but only scored 16 points and may be even more sluggish coming off the bye week. I expect the Hoosiers to win handily.
prediction: Indiana
5. Rank the players who get the most receptions (highest to lowest)
Theo Wease Jr., Brennan Presley, Josh Kelly, Travis Hunter
This is a really tough choice because all four of them are great, but it’s hard to go up against Travis Hunter. It’s also a revenge game of sorts for him, as he lacerated his liver after taking a late hit from one of the Colorado State players in last year’s game. There’s already a lot of rumors flying around between players on both teams ahead of this rivalry, but I expect Hunter to perform on the biggest stage, as he has for most of his career thus far. Josh Kelly might also be worth considering here. He’s ranked 10th nationally in receiving yards and will be playing against North Texas, but it’s worth mentioning that the Mean Green are 2-0.
prediction: Travis Hunter, Josh Kelley, Theo Wease Jr., Brennan Presley
6. What will be the outcome of this match?
Alabama Win by 16 or more points Wisconsin Win or lose within 15 points
Alabama looked shaky last week against South Florida, but to be fair, that game in 2023 was much closer under coach Nick Saban, with the Tide winning 17-3. Cullen DeBoer’s team had a few explosive plays late in the game to handily win 42-16 in Tuscaloosa last weekend. As mentioned above, Wisconsin is not in good form, with wins over Western Michigan and South Dakota by just 14 points each. Looking at their schedule, I don’t think the Badgers will see a more talented front seven than they do this Saturday, with guys like LT Overton, Damon Payne, Jihad Campbell, and Quandarius Robinson all capable of consistently putting up a pass rush. The Tide should win here. No pun intended.
prediction: Alabama wins by 16 or more points
