Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler was arrested Thursday night after a traffic accident in Tennessee and faces four charges, a Franklin Police Department spokesperson told ESPN.
Cutler, 41, was charged with driving under the influence, possession of a handgun while intoxicated, failure to use due care to avoid collision, and implied consent.
According to a release from the Franklin Police Department, officers were dispatched to a minor traffic accident in downtown Franklin on Thursday around 5 p.m. Police say Cutler rear-ended another vehicle.
“While speaking with Cutler, officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol,” the statement said. “Mr. Cutler also had slurred speech and his eyes were bloodshot. Mr. Cutler refused field sobriety tests and was transported to a local hospital where a blood sample was obtained pursuant to a blood test warrant.”
Police searched Cutler’s car and found he was in possession of two firearms, including a loaded pistol.
Cutler was arrested at the Williamson County Jail shortly before 7 p.m. and given $5,000 bail. He was released at 9:59 p.m.
Cutler was a first-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2006 and played until 2008. During the 2009 draft, he was traded to the Chicago Bears and played in 102 games through the 2016 season, gaining 23,443 yards and becoming the franchise’s all-time leading passer. and 154 touchdowns. He played his final season with the Miami Dolphins in 2017.
