Finn Russell: Andy Farrell helped Johnny Sexton and I bury hatchet ahead of British and Irish Lions tour to Australia | Rugby Union News

5 Min Read

Finn Russell revealed that the Old Fords had joined forces with enemies to Australia on the Lions tour of England and Ireland, filling up hatch with Johnny Sexton with Andy Farrell.

Sexton was previously critical of Russell, labelling him “fantastic” and “media darling,” but added that the former England captain would choose Owen Farrell against the Wallabies as he is a “test match animal.”

And in his autobiography, the Irish Great confessed that he would “kill to this day” what was overlooked in support of Russell on the 2021 Lions Tour.

Now, the former fly-half rival is working together to beat Australia, with Sexton working in pole position as Lions Kickskills Coach and Russell to fulfill his playmaking duties in the Test series.

The British and Ireland Lions were defeated by Argentina in Dublin on Friday, and on the opening tour fixture

One of the blame quickly disappeared when they first linked up with players involved in the Premiership and arrived at camp earlier this week at the United Rugby Championship Finals.

“It was kind of crazy. It was never what. We laughed right away when we went in and Andy put it in the bed, so it was good,” Russell, Scotland International said.

“It’s not that it’s going to be a problem, I don’t believe it. We’re all here with the same goals: to win the series.

“I was only here for a few days, but I was working with Johnny and I’m happy to bounce back questions from him and chat with him about what he’s seeing.

“It was really funny to be on the same training side as he was with the numbers we had and he had to jump in from time to time.

“It’s good to see someone here who has his experience.”

Russell says Lions head coach Andy Farrell helped him “sleep” between himself and Sexton

Australia will be Russell’s third expedition with the Lion, all three will be a very different experience.

In New Zealand in 2017, he was part of the controversial “Geography 6,” a group of Scottish and Welsh players, not merit to the Warren Gatland team, but because he is close during the summer tour.

Four years later, he traveled to South Africa. There, all the games were held behind closed doors due to the pandemic, and the lions denied the famous “Red Sea” support. Basslingmaster has begun his third test against Springbok.

Farrell branded the Lions’ defeat to Argentina in Dublin’s “unacceptable”

“New Zealand was still amazing as it was the first time I’d been called by the Lions,” Russell said.

“We weren’t there on the whole tour, but going to New Zealand and playing was really cool for me.

“And in 2021, even if it was a community, it was always special. The game didn’t have family, friends or fans, but it was still amazing in a different way.

“As for the boys, we were probably the only ones at the hotel, so we got to know each other a little better. We’re looking forward to seeing what this will look like.”
