The New York Giants (2-6) hosted the NFC East-leading Washington Commanders (6-2) at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon, hoping to keep their slim postseason chances alive.
On a day of football in northern New Jersey, the Giants handed out bobbleheads of Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor, wearing legacy uniforms from their glory days in the 1980s.
The stage was set for the Giants to pull off perhaps a mild upset as a four-point deficit at home.
Here’s what happened…
Q1 | 2nd quarter | Q3 | Q4 | final | |
giants | 0 | 7 | 3 | 12 | twenty two |
commander | 7 | 14 | 3 | 3 | 27 |
- The Managers reached the end zone on three consecutive possessions in the first half, making it 3-3 inside the red zone. The Giants reached the red zone three times in the second half, but were limited to just two field goals.
- The Giants entered the game leading the NFL in sacks (35). They were held sackless (valid word retained) in this game and only had two QB hits to Jaeden Daniels, both by Azeez Ojulari.
- Quarterback Daniel Jones completed 4 of 4 passes for a touchdown in the first half, but had zero passing yards. He is the first player in the NFL to accomplish this since 2000. Rookie wideout Malik Nabors was held catchless in the first half.
Commanders kicker Austin Seibert sank a 20-yard field goal to give Washington a 27-16 lead with 3:46 left in the fourth quarter. The Giants scored again to cut the lead to 27-22, but were unable to complete the two-point conversion. This was the second failure of the game, making them 0-6 on 2-point conversions this season.
- RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. It was a start to the show in the first half, but the Giants essentially took a backseat as they played from behind and had to rely more on the pass.
- QB Daniel Jones He overcame a tough first half and completed 20 of 26 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. He also gained 54 yards on seven rushes, including a bruising 2-yard touchdown run, with the fourth touchdown called back on a ticky-tuck OPI.
- WR Malik Nabers He caught nine passes for 59 yards, all in the second half.
- LB Micah McFadden He led the Giants with 11 tackles (six solo) on the afternoon.
The only reported injury occurred when Darius Slayton left the field late in the fourth quarter after recovering a forced fumble with an interception. He was examined in a blue tent and then headed to the locker room to be diagnosed with a concussion.
Head coach Brian Daboll plans to have a Zoom call with the team’s beat writers Monday afternoon before several players are also available.
Big Blue is scheduled to return to practice on Wednesday ahead of their Week 10 game against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, November 10th at Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. Kickoff is 9:30pm (EST).
