Columbia University may be approaching a contract with the Trump administration to revive federal funding for universities on civil rights issues, according to reports from multiple media outlets.
In this transaction, Colombia will have to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to those suspected of breach. Washington Free Beacon Reported by the Wall Street Journal.
In return, the university will reclaim about $400 million in federal grants and contracts that the administration cut back on in March.
The agreement does not include some of the stricter provisions the White House initially requested, such as a consent ruling or reforming Colombia’s governance structure, the outlet reported. The White House has also removed requests for the Presidential Search Committee, which replaces interim university president Claire Shipman, to include people with various political views, the free Beacon reported.
A university spokesperson said the school is working with the federal government to drive discussions, but there is no solution yet, the free beacon reported.
Such a deal would be an unprecedented arrangement between the federal government and elite universities. President Donald Trump can set precedents for dealing with other universities, including Harvard.
