Botafogo surprised Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 on Thursday night in their second match for each club in the Club World Cup.
Igor Jesus scored in the second half of the first half, and the South American champions launched a tense second half, moving the group 2-0-0.
PSG has not lost the competition since May 3, but the European champions looked sometimes tired, before a lively Rose Bowl crowd of 53,699.
Jesus’ stunning score of 36 minutes was the first goal allowed since May 17 by PSG, which routed Atletico Madrid 4-0 in Pasadena last Sunday.
The French powerhouse surpassed its final three opponents by a total of 12-0, winning the French Cup and Champions League finals along the way.
Ballon D’Or candidate Ousmane Dembele missed PSG’s second straight game with a quadriceps injury. Despite manager Luis Enrique spinning the starting lineup, his teammates still controlled ownership in the first half.
Everything was restored by Jesus’ incredible personal efforts.
“So I say that football cemeteries are full of favorites. It was really about believing in ourselves. …We played almost perfect, technically speaking, games. PSG really didn’t have the opportunity.
PSG ended with Botafogo’s four 16-shot attempts, all four were on target, while PSG only had two on the net.
“I think that’s normal. This competition is very fierce and difficult. All teams are especially motivated towards the team. I think our team has struggled with their defense at times. I think Botafogo is one of the toughest defensive teams in the tournament,” said Luis Enrique.
Jesus dominated Jefferson Sabarino’s long pass, surpassing the two defenders and hitting the shot past Gianluigi Donnaruma. He overcomes the barrier and goes up to the front row of the Rose Bowl to celebrate with his supporters who were Botafogo’s ec.
Although PSG has had very few sublime conjoint plays that characterize the star’s run over the past month, Luis Enrique’s Club is still in a strong position as he progresses to play MLS Side Seattle Sounder.
Thousands of loud Brazilian fans travelled to celebrate one of the most notable victories in Botafogo’s celebratory history. The club faces Atletico in the Rose Bowl on Monday and has an incredible opportunity to move forward from this difficult group.
