Scotty Schaeffler made seven birdies and eagles in the third round at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas, and Robert McInteel was also in a fray.
He won his third major victory at the PGA Championship a week ago, but starting his weekend 10-strokes from the lead, Schaeffler is tied up for the seventh time after shooting 6 under (64) after plundering seven birdies and eagles.
“You always want to play the perfect round, and that basically never happens,” Schaeffler said. “I mean, the three of us bogeys definitely hurt, especially when we’re trying to chase them, but overall I did some good things.”
Schaeffler needed another epic round to become the first player since Dustin Johnson, who won three consecutive times since Dustin Johnson in 2017, and is the only player other than Ben Hogan, who won Byron Nelson and Colonial in the same season in 1946.
“I definitely feel a bit tired mentally. I’m going to have a lighter than usual schedule for tournaments this week, but I feel like I’m in a good place overall for the game.
“I felt like I had a good rest to get started this week,” he said. “I’m just fighting here. I had a good day today. I’m sure the first two days have been a little better, but I’ll see how things shake and what I can do tomorrow.”
Scottish McIntyre surrendered himself to eight competitions under the age of eight after 64 rounds, including seven birdies.
Ben Griffin and Matty Schmidt remain locked together at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round.
Both men shot a third round 68 at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, sharing 13th place with Ricky Fowler at 13 under, providing the closest challenge four shots.
England’s Tommy Fleetwood went 10th in sixth after carding a par-round of 70 levels.
Both American Griffin and German Schmidt endured an eventful round, picking up shots on each of the first three holes before Griffin surrendered twice and three times in the sixth, and Schmidt dropped shots on the 11th and 17th.
