Could the Steelers give Jameis Winston another pick?
Jameis Winston’s Pittsburgh Steelers will start the game with a quarterback who just scored his first defensive points of the season and who just allowed two defensive touchdowns in one game.
The Steelers can also score points on defense. Although not against Jameis Winston, he scored two defensive touchdowns in the same game against the Browns last year. It wouldn’t be entirely out of the realm of possibility for him to post defensive scores for several weeks in a row.
And playing against Jameis Winston certainly increases the Steelers’ chances. Winston has the fifth-most pick-sixes of any active quarterback (14), and the quarterbacks before him have even more snaps. In recent years, he has spent a lot of time as a reserve, and has not had many opportunities to increase his scoring potential.
But the Denver Broncos have certainly addressed that issue, so the Steelers could add to Winston’s misery. After the game, the Browns quarterback said he was praying to the Lord to deliver him from the pick-six. However, this could go the other way, as I doubt the higher powers are Browns fans.
The Steelers have players who are capable of making plays and can compete to return. Minkah Fitzpatrick has had several pick-sixes in his career, even if he’s had a takeout drought. Donte Jackson has one game under his belt in his career, but he was still pretty good at picking up yards. Beanie Bishop Jr. almost made the Pick Six himself earlier this year. One bad ball from Jameis Winston might be all the Steelers need.
The Steelers are first in the NFL with 25 takeaways and fourth with 13 interceptions. Their ranking outside the top 10 in pass attempts makes it all the more impressive.
The Steelers’ 2024 season is currently underway after a disappointing year in which they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. The Buffalo Bills have had a long offseason since coming out of their misery in January. There are bright spots, but things could go off the rails any minute now.
The biggest question plaguing the team is the quarterback issue. Will Russell Wilson get a big new contract next year?and is Justin Fields still under consideration? What will the team do next? Address the depth chartsurprisingly still in flux?
After several weeks of training camp and preseason games, the regular season has arrived. The Steelers made numerous moves through signings, trades, and releases. More than usual, they seemed confident in creating holes and confident in their ability to fill them. Some were buried, some not so much. But now that there are so many pieces to the puzzle, all that remains is to ask a new set of questions.
