Griezmann made his debut in 2014
Griezmann made his debut for France in a friendly against the Netherlands in 2014 and quickly became an important player under coach Didier Deschamps, contributing both as a scorer and as an assister. Only Hugo Lloris and Lilian Thuram have played more games for France.
“I’m closing this chapter of my life with so many memories in my heart,” Griezmann said on Instagram. “Thank you for this wonderful tricolor adventure. See you again.”
Griezmann ranks fourth in France’s all-time goalscoring list, behind Olivier Giroud, Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappé. He played a key role in France’s runner-up finish at the European Championship in 2016, their World Cup victory in 2018 and their Nations League title three years later.
“After 10 amazing years filled with challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it’s time for me to turn the page and make way for a new generation,” he said.
Deschamps praised Griezmann’s team spirit and ability both in attack and defense. “Even though his club career is not over, Antoine remains a monument to French football and one of the greatest players in history,” Deschamps said in a message from the French Football Federation. In the Nations League in September, he came on as a substitute and won -0 against Belgium. Despite struggling at the recent European Championships, he was expected to continue playing until the 2026 World Cup. In his retirement message, Griezmann thanked Deschamps for his support even after losing the captaincy to Mbappé. “It is often said that Antoine was my beloved. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for everything, my Grizzou,” Deschamps said.
Griezmann has not stated how long he will continue his career at the club, with his current contract at Atlético Madrid running until 2026.
