Aadhaar face authentication now in private apps? Government allows access via MeitY portal

The government is aiming to allow private agencies to integrate Aadhaar-enabled facial recognition into mobile applications, simplifying access to customers to services, the Ministry of Electronics (Meity) said Thursday.

This integration is facilitated through the Aadhaar Good Governance Portal, launched by Meity, which serves as a guide to entities seeking Aadhaar authentication.

“The portal serves as a resource-rich guide and provides detailed SOPs that require authentication on how AADHAAR authentication is applied and onboarded. Facial recognition may be integrated into customer-facing apps that allow authentication anywhere,” the ministry said in a statement.

Notified on January 31, 2025, the amendment aims to restore Aadhaar authentication access for private companies, increasing the ease of living and improving service accessibility for multiple sectors, including hospitality, healthcare, credit ratings, e-commerce, education, and aggregator services.

Aadhaar certification for private entities

Meity has introduced an online platform (SWIK.MEITY.GOV.IN) to streamline the approval of Aadhaar authentication requests.

“The online platform (SWIK.MEITY.GOV.IN) will be in effect under AADHAAR (SWIK.MEITY.GOV.IN), which was notified in late January 2016 after the 2025 AADHAAR certification under AADHAAR (Target Delivery of Finance and Other Grants, Benefits and Services).

The Supreme Court was called Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act in September 2018. “Vibrates misuse.” In this section, we have allowed private companies to use Aadhaar certification for business purposes. The new rules are designed to make Aadhaar “people-friendly” while enabling easier life and better service accessibility.

Private entities can now use Aadhaar certification for features such as customer onboarding, e-kyc verification, staff attendance, and exam registration.

The Aadhaar Good Governance Portal was launched by Meity Secretary S Krishnan in front of Uida CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, NIC Director Inder Pal Singh Sethi, Uidai DDG Manish Bhardwaj and other high-ranking officials.

Krishnan said, “We hope to promote the process of adding more use cases in the area of ​​superior governance and ease of life by launching this platform and continuing improvements to the other processes and systems around it.”
