More than 220,000 adult portable bed rails were recalled Thursday after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued an emergency warning after one death and serious injury were reported.

Over the past three years, adult portable bed rails have been recalled an additional eight times after 17 reports of serious head, neck and chest injuries and fatalities due to entrapment. A total of nine recalls and two additional product warnings affected more than 3 million units.

The recall targets bed rails manufactured by Medical King, a Brooklyn, New York company, after reports of a potential entrapment and suffocation hazard. Affected model numbers are 7007, 7057, and 7037. One death was reported related to this recall, bringing the total to 18.

The CPSC said data shows 92% of deaths caused by portable bed rails are due to entrapment, usually to the head or neck.

In January 2023, the CPSC issued new mandatory safety standards for adult portable bed rails, requiring all rails sold and manufactured in the United States to comply with current performance and testing requirements.
