Rolling stock manufacturer Titagarh Rail Systems on Monday handed over its first driverless train set to Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation’s Yellow Line.
This automated train formation is the first Indian-made passenger train formation to run on a major 18 km stretch.
The official handover strengthened Kolkata-based Titagarh’s position as a leading manufacturer of cutting-edge and world-class trains and highlighted India’s rise as a global hub for railway manufacturing. Titagarh Rail Systems said in a stock exchange filing that it celebrates the rollout of the Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line and demonstrates the capabilities of its Metro manufacturing facility in Uttarpara, West Bengal.
“These milestones highlight the company’s unwavering commitment to advancing urban mobility in India and demonstrate its growing manufacturing capabilities and innovative approach in the railway sector,” the company said.
The event was also attended by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal, who joined the celebrations virtually.
“With the launch of Bangalore Metro’s new train fleet and the metro’s coverage of over 1000 km, we celebrate a significant milestone in India’s urban mobility journey. A global hub for IT and innovation. One Bengaluru continues to address urban challenges by strengthening metro connectivity, benefiting millions of people,” Lal said.
The minister added, “India currently ranks third in the world in terms of metros and we aim to overtake the US within five years.”

Designed for cutting-edge performance, the train set incorporates a high degree of automation and can operate in unmanned mode. This is a significant milestone as it is the first metro car to be completely manufactured in India for the Yellow Line of the Bangalore Metro and the first set of stainless steel cars by Titagarh Rail Systems, the company said. It added in a stock exchange filing.
The company plans to deliver two more trains to the Yellow Line by April this year. After that, the company plans to ramp up production and run two trains a month by September 2025.
