Batman The film was turned into a spinoff series focused on Colin Farrell’s villain, and while his rogues gallery moniker remains the same, The Penguin’s real name was changed in the 2022 film from Oswald Cobblepot, his name since 1941. Detective Comics From his debut to “Oz Cobb,” we finally have the details of why that happened.
SFX Magazine (via: Comic Book Movies), and while “Oz Cobb” is admittedly a bit of a goofy last name, it shouldn’t be interpreted as the character shortening it. This guy is Oz Cobb. Producer Dylan Clark explained what happened in a magazine interview, first pointing to previous name changes of Batman villains as precedent. “They didn’t go from an unrealistic name to a real name in the comics, like they did with the Riddler, from Edward Nygma to Edward Nashton. In doing so, they kept the character grounded,” Clark said.
penguin The team apparently got an enthusiastic green light from DC Comics boss Jim Lee: “They had considered changing his name at one point but had never gone ahead with it. Matt asked, ‘Can we call the character Oz Cobb?’ and Jim said, ‘Of course!’ So we got the King’s blessing. With just a slight name change, we could look at the character in a realistic light.”
Lauren LeFranc, penguin The showrunner and creator is BatmanThe show “creates a new canon” and adds its own flavor to familiar characters: “In the Gotham City that Matt has created in the movies, Cobblepot felt like an unreal person, just like Cobb is a real last name. He’s a gangster, so that felt more right.”

DC Comics fans will soon find out more about Farrell’s breakout character. penguinThe series also stars Cristin Milioti (Sofia Falcone), Rhenzy Feliz (Victor Aguilar), Michael Kelly (Johnny Viti), Shohreh Aghdashloo (Nadia Maroni), Deirdre O’Connell (Frances Cobb), Clancy Brown (Salvatore Maroni), James Madio (Milos Grapa), Scott Cohen (Luca Falcone), Michael Zegen (Alberto Falcone), Carmen Ejogo (Eve Carlo) and Theo Rossi (Dr. Julian Rush) and will be available on HBO from September 19th.
