New York Botanical Gardens: Facts and History
The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx is one of the largest and most famous botanical gardens in the world, spanning over 250 acres of stunning landscapes, themed gardens and historic landmarks.
Founded in 1891, the garden was inspired by London’s Royal Botanical Gardens and later became a major centre for plant research, conservation and education.
Explore highlights such as the iconic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, peaceful rose gardens and 50 acres of old growing forests. With its seasonal displays, events and rich history, NYBG is a must-see for nature lovers and history lovers.
Orchid is on display at the New York Botanical Garden
The main feature of NYBG is that the garden theme and display changes regularly, providing an impressive variety of plants and flowers at any time. Every spring, NYBG presents run shows at the beautiful Enid A. Haupt Conservatory.
We were fortunate to be able to see a preview of the show at the 2017 NYBG Media and Press event. Meanwhile, it was discovered that the 15th anniversary of the Orchids Show was specifically tailored to Thai cultural influences.
And certainly, we felt like we were in a foreign world, not in the Bronx. Because the whole greenhouse was beautifully decorated, inspired by Thai themes. Tropical, humid air creates the perfect environment for thousands of orchids of different colors, shapes and scents.
Thailand in New York City
Thailand is considered a mecca for orchid growth as it is beneficial for plants to bloom. There are over 1,200 Thai species of Thai species that grow everywhere, even in the trees along the middle streets of Thailand.
In Thai culture, colour and symbols are important. One of them is an elephant. A closer look at the orchid show decorations will reveal many elephants in the arrangement of plants and in the golden lanterns hanging from the ceiling.
They are always hanging in a group of nine. This is a Thai lucky number, and the lantern is supposed to alienate evil spirits.
Thai culture in NYBG
Another highlight of the exhibition is the “Sara” frame. This is a traditional Thai pavilion, covered in a stunning orchid. Other South Asian cultural influences also exist in the form of shrines placed for protectionist spirits.
Among the many details of the arrangement, we could find a pond with small plants of watermelon lilies and pineapple, giving the entire exhibit a special atmosphere and allowing us to escape the New York winter for a few hours.
For us, the NYBG Orchid show is a paradise of colour and fragrance and highly recommended by nature lovers. Another reason to explore this beautiful place: If you have a New York Pass, admission to NYBG is free!

If you want to visit New York’s Botanical Gardens, we recommend purchasing tickets in advance. Tickets start at $35 for adults and $15 for children aged 2-12.
How to get there
New York’s Botanical Garden is located in the Bronx (2900 SouthernBLVD) and offers a variety of options to get there.
- Option 1: Subway – Take I’ll train to Bedford Park Boulevard Station. From that station you can walk (about 20 minutes) and take a BX25 or BX26 bus to the entrance to the garden Moshol.
- Option 2: Railway – Take Harlem Subway to Plant Garden Station Local Line It is located directly across the street from the entrance to Moshol in the garden. Tickets cost just $5 off-peak and $7 on peak.
