SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy’s status for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers remains uncertain after he was limited in practice for the second straight day.
Purdy, who is suffering from soreness in his right (throwing) shoulder, was on the practice field early in Thursday’s session, which was open to reporters. He threw lightly in the first few periods before going into the weight room. He did not return to the practice field for the remainder of the time reporters could observe him, and did not hold his usual Thursday afternoon press conference afterwards.
Niners coach Kyle Shanahan told San Francisco’s KNBR Radio that Purdy actually improved from Wednesday to Thursday, but there are still hurdles to clear before Purdy can play in Green Bay. did.
“We were still limited today,” Shanahan said Thursday. “Yesterday I didn’t do as much, today I did a little more, but I definitely wasn’t doing a normal workload. I went out and did a little bit, and then I came back in the middle and put my arms up and rested. So I just kept going.”I hope to feel good on Sunday as I go through rehab.”
Purdy first appeared on Monday’s injury report when Shanahan was discussing the injury from Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Shanahan said afterward that Purdy would be considered day-to-day due to a shoulder injury.
Shanahan said Wednesday that he wasn’t too worried “right now” about Purdy missing the Packers game, adding, “We’ll see what happens this week.” Shanahan reiterated Thursday that he didn’t think there was a shoulder problem against Seattle, but acknowledged that the soreness could be a result of Purdy being hit multiple times against the Seahawks.
Purdy dealt with an injury during the week, but had played in games up until then. In 2022, he played against Seattle on Thursday night in Week 15, despite not pitching before the game due to rib and oblique issues.
If Purdy is unavailable against Green Bay, the Niners will likely start veteran Brandon Allen. Allen has started nine regular season games since entering the league as a sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016. Three of those games were with the Denver Broncos in 2019, and the remaining six were with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020 and 2021. He has been with the 49ers since 2023 and has yet to start a game in San Francisco, but he is leading the scout team against the defense. All the while.
“I’ve always liked him,” Niners defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen said. “I think he performed really well last year when he was doing things. He’s been in the league a long time. He’s played in a lot of systems. He’s got a great arm. He’s a good quarterback. is.”
In addition to Allen, the Niners have Josh Dobbs on the roster and rookie Tanner Mordecai on the practice squad. The Niners said one of those quarterbacks will be available to speak to reporters on Friday, which should provide clues about Purdy’s progress.
Purdy isn’t the only key Niner player whose injury status is questionable heading into Sunday’s game. Defensive end Nick Bosa (left hip and oblique) and offensive tackle Trent Williams (ankle) again did not participate in Thursday’s practice. Last week, both players missed the first two days of practice, with Bosa participating on Friday and Williams not participating before the game against the Seahawks.
Shanahan told KNBR he expects similar developments for both this week.
”[Trent] He’s in crisis just like Nick,” Shanahan said. “It was the same thing last week. … With guys like Trent and guys like Nick, because of their personalities, their history, and the positions they play, no matter what this week goes, they’re going to be there forever.” Until kick-off when we’re going to win or until it’s late when we can decide.”
