In an interview on social media platform “X,” former President Donald Trump spoke publicly for the first time about the assassination attempt that the U.S. Secret Service appears to have thwarted on Sunday.
The interview, conducted by the cryptocurrency influencer and focusing on his sons’ new cryptocurrency endeavors, touched on many of Trump’s typical campaign topics.
He began by praising the Secret Service for doing a “great job” protecting him during the incident, which happened while he was playing golf at a West Palm Beach, Fla., course, when he heard four or five gunshots and was rushed away in a golf cart.
“I wanted to sink that last putt,” he joked.
He recounted how Secret Service agents noticed guns in the bushes surrounding the course and began firing. He went on to describe the arrest of a suspect, who authorities say did not fire his weapon.
Trump also reflected on the June assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, which left one person dead and two others injured, including Trump, who suffered an ear injury, saying this latest attempt was “a much better outcome” because no one was killed.
He also recalled his conversation with President Biden on Monday, saying Trump was “very gracious” during the call and that Biden had asked Trump if he needed more personnel.
“I need to have more of my agents there because we have between 50,000 and 60,000 people at the event,” Trump said.
“And he couldn’t have been nicer,” Trump added of Biden. In typical campaign behavior, Trump sharply criticized the Biden administration’s policies, as well as Biden and Harris personally.
This came after Trump, in a Fox News interview, slammed Biden and Harris for their “comments” about the assassination attempt on him, and in a post on X, called Harris a “hateful” person.
Trump has frequently used inflammatory language in his public comments.
Vice presidential candidate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, echoed that sentiment Monday night during a campaign rally at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Georgia Victory Dinner in Atlanta.
“Nobody has tried to kill Kamala Harris in the last few months, but we have had two people try to kill Donald Trump,” Vance said. “I think this is pretty strong evidence that the left needs to tone down the rhetoric and stop this crap.”
