Trump made his remarks at his oval office on Wednesday after David Purdue’s oathing ceremony as US ambassador to China.
These were Trump’s second remarks on escalating tensions between two nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours after India launched an operation targeting Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Hours after the Indian strike, Trump said India and Pakistan had been fighting for a long time and people knew “something was going to happen.”
“That’s a shame. I’ve heard it the same way I walked through the oval (office) doors. I’ve heard about it. I think people knew something was going to happen based on a bit of the past.
“They have fought for decades and centuries, and in fact, if you really think about it,” Trump said when asked about the attacks between India and Pakistan.
When asked if he had a message to the country, he said: “No, I hope it ends very quickly.”
India launched Operation Sindoah early on Wednesday, struggling nine terrorist targets in Pok and Pakistan’s Punjab in retaliation for the terrorist attack in Pahargam, which killed 26 people on April 22.
Meanwhile, spokesman for the Pakistani Army, General Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry, said 31 people were killed and 57 were injured in missile strikes fired in the cities of Punjab and Pok.
