Gary Neville says Manchester United will need five new signatures to match the system of Reuben Amorim.
United are 13th in the Premier League after drawing 0-0 at home to Manchester City on Sunday, winning only two of their last eight league games.
Amorim has had a variety of successes and stuck to his preferred 3-4-3 formation after signing leftist Backpatrick Dorgu in a £30 million deal from Leccee during the winter transfer window – but Sky Sports Neville thinks there will be more additions needed.
“From a unified perspective, I can see why he returned to the low block,” Neville said. “But that is what we see from Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskier and Eric Ten Hag.
“They all came with the intention of playing high press, high energy football, but everything is going to go back to the low block in a big game.
“I understand why Reuben Amorim did it today with the players he has.
“Before thinking about the rest, they need five new players right away.
“Three fronts aren’t enough, two wingbacks, they’re not enough. They need five players. They need five players and they need to serve him with enough five players in this system so that he can play his system the way he wants.”
Neville was disappointed by the “love-in” between the players full-time in the Manchester Derby, saying “both teams are happy with 0-0.”
At a post-game press conference, Amorim replied: “I understand that Gary Neville is critical of everything. We understand that we have the worst season in history. Manchester City has won everything in the past, but we’ve struggled this season.
“I’ve been fighting every single time for the title, so I understand the important aspects of the players who played this game in this game. That’s a different context.”
“Elanga, Rashford and Welbeck are better than the current forwards.”
Neville compared United’s current forward to speaking before a 0-0 draw with Man City.
“Since Ir Alex Ferguson other than Louis Van Girl, Manchester United managers have been able to control the game with ownership. That’s a real problem.
“The players up front aren’t the quality they need at the club, and that sounds really tough, but that’s true.
“We’ll need smart hiring, which means pulling out players at a good price and getting underrated players, which is what every team is trying to do in the league.
“We managed to lead four players that aren’t at Manchester United onto the field, behind Anthony Elanga, Marcus Rashford, Danny Welbeck and Scott McTominai, they’re far better than the four previous players.
“United has let go of the players — and I’m not saying they’re the solution now. But they’ve replaced players that weren’t on the norm with players that weren’t on that level.”
