Former President Donald Trump won Nevada’s six electoral votes, according to an Associated Press campaign call.
This is the first time in 20 years that Nevada has elected a Republican as president.
One of the key Sunbelt states in this year’s election, Nevada is a diverse, working-class state where the economy is at the forefront of many voters’ concerns. Mr. Trump was expected to make inroads with some voters who have traditionally voted Democratic, especially as the state suffered economically from the pandemic.
Democrats used to hold an advantage over Republicans in voter registration, but that advantage has shrunk somewhat in recent years. Republican voters also turned out in large numbers during the state’s in-person early voting. Before Election Day, Democratic groups, including labor unions, sought to increase voter turnout to close the gap.
Democrats were also hoping for higher turnout because Nevada is one of the states that is questioning abortion rights.
The last time Nevada elected a Republican as president was in 2004, when it elected George W. Bush.
