India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested Sandip Ghosh, former principal of state-run RG Khar Medical College and Hospital, in connection with alleged financial irregularities.
The central investigating agency is probing alleged financial irregularities during Ghosh’s tenure at RG Khar Hospital, where a woman doctor was found dead on duty on August 9.
Ghosh was interrogated at the CBI’s CGO facility in Salt Lake City before being taken to the Nizam’s Palace for formal arrest proceedings.
On August 23, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation into alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kalu Medical College and Hospital from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the West Bengal government to the CBI.
The state government had earlier constituted a four-member SIT to probe the financial issues of the hospital.
The CBI has since completed a polygraph test on Ghosh and has also conducted a polygraph test on prime accused Sanjay Roy as part of its ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of the young female doctor.
On August 13, the central investigating agency had taken Roy, a civil volunteer with Kolkata Police, into custody after the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation into the rape-murder case to the CBI.
Following the massive ‘Take Back the Night’ protests on the eve of Independence Day to protest against the rape and murder of a young doctor, Kolkata saw similar large-scale demonstrations across the city on Sunday.
Thousands of ordinary citizens took to the streets, demanding justice for the victims and severe punishment for all those involved in this heinous crime.
