Former President Joe Biden said he took “liability” for Donald Trump’s return to the White House and accused his successor of not protecting the country’s interests.
Sitting in his first live TV interview since his departure, Biden was asked by “vision” if he felt responsible for Trump’s victory.
“Yes, yes, look, I’m in charge and he won, so I’m responsible,” Biden said.
Democratic strategist Christian Ramos called Biden “refreshing” to do so, even though the party is still rebuilding its brand.
“I think he’s saying that in this public way it’s healing for the Democrats,” Ramos added. “Even though he was convicted of multiple crimes and spurred an attack on our Capitol, Trump is not yet responsible for his actions. It tells me everything.”
Offering an assessment of Trump’s return to power, Biden said his successor “frankly did a very poor job in the interests of the United States.”
“You know, the biggest alliance in world history is NATO, and he’s blasting it out,” he said. “He spent the worst 100 days the president has ever had.”
In a statement, the White House responded to a request for comment on Biden’s interview. “Joe Biden is a complete dishonor to the country and the offices he occupied. He clearly lost all his mental abilities and his handlers thought it was a good idea for him to do interviews.
Biden has been heavily criticized by Democrats for staying in the presidential election until July last year. The inflection point came after Biden visibly stumbled over his words in an argument with Trump.
The former president defended the decision to stay in the race until late July. An interview with the BBC was released on WednesdayVice President Kamala Harris said there was “still six months” to make her claim to the American people. When asked if he was surprised by her loss in November, he said that while accusing him of running a sexist campaign against her.
“I wasn’t surprised, not because I didn’t think the Vice President would not become president, but she is her. She is entitled to be president of the United States,” Biden said. “I wasn’t surprised because they did the route – a sexist route.”
The former president was also asked about Harris’s own comments. About “view” She defended Biden’s record and said that what she did differently “is not something that comes to mind.”
“First of all, I didn’t encourage her to say that,” Biden said of Harris’s remarks. “She has to be her own person, and she was.”
“She was part of every success we had,” he added.
Biden, who said he was in touch with Harris, said he sought his advice on his next political move while pondering about running for a California governor and another run at the White House.
“She has made difficult decisions about what she is trying to do,” he said. “I think she’s first class, but we have a lot of really good candidates, so I’m optimistic. I’m not pessimistic.”
