Zoox, a Robotaxi manufacturer owned by Amazon, has launched a recall to update its software on 270 unmanned vehicles following a collision in Las Vegas.
Zoox announced a software recall on Monday, saying the update addresses the “root cause” of recent collisions and has already been deployed to potentially affected vehicles.
According to a recall report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the crash involving a vacant Zoox Robotaxi and a passenger vehicle in Las Vegas occurred on April 8th. No one was injured in the accident.

The accident caused the passenger car to “quickly approach the lane where our dedicated Robotaxi was traveling,” Zoox told the website on Monday.

“In anticipation of the passenger car moving forward, the Zoox Robotaxi slowed down and piloted to the right. Instead, the car stopped completely, succumbed completely to the Zoox Robotaxi and stayed in the shoulder lane,” continued Robotaxi Maker. “The Zoox Robotaxi braked hard, but contact was inevitable.”
According to Zoox, the company conducted “analysis and rigorous testing” to determine what led to the conflict. Additionally, unmanned vehicles have been temporarily suspended.
According to an NHTSA report, older versions of the automated drive system software previously installed on the affected Zoox Robotaxis could make inaccurate predictions when another vehicle slowly approaches vertically and stops in certain circumstances.”
However, Zoox updated its software in mid-April to fix the issue.
