Officials said the Veer Savarkar International Airport here has introduced an Advanced Automated Parking System (AAPS) with sensor-based boom barriers, CCTVs and automated ticketing machines to provide a hassle-free parking experience to passengers and visitors.
AAPS will significantly reduce the need for manual intervention in traffic management and also improve transparency in parking fees. The system will be utilised to “timestamp” parking fees at four strategic locations within the airport and car parks, improving accuracy and transparency for both users and service providers.
Airport Director Devender Yadav said, “The start of international flights from Port Blair marks a major milestone in our efforts towards automation, excellence and preparedness. AirAsia will operate the first international flight from Port Blair to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in November 2024. Currently, no international airline operates from Port Blair.”
“Another major automation project, ‘Digi Yatra’ is also in the works. It is an advanced technology based passenger processing solution based on facial recognition technology that will enable contactless and seamless movement of passengers at various checkpoints at the airport,” Yadav said.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) has taken up the construction work of the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB), Port Blair, at an estimated cost of approximately Rs 7,077.3 crore.
It has a total built-up area of 40,837 square metres and can handle 1,200 passengers at peak times and around 4 million passengers per year.
