How is the NFL schedule determined?
The NFL has detailed rules for how schedules are integrated. Please see the details below.
- Each team will play 17 regular season games.
- Each team receives goodbye week.
- The team will alternate seasons with nine regular season games and one preseason game, eight regular season games and two preseason games.
- Each team has six games against their divisional opponents. Two for each team, one at home and the other on the road.
- Each team has four games with divisional teams within the meeting. Two games at home, two games on the road.
- Each team has four games with teams from other conference departments. Two games at home and two games at road.
- Each team has two games against the teams in the remaining two divisions, one game at home and one game. Matchups are based on previous season’s category rankings.
- The 17th game for each team is an additional game against non-conference opponents in the division that the team is not planning to play. Matchups are based on previous season’s category rankings.
